Wild Nights - Wild Nights!

Okay, this is going to be a really different post from what we usually do.

We're trying to get through this last week of classes for the semester and then next week we take our finals. Therefore, we're going to be posting some things that don't require a lot of time. But, we wanted to make them somewhat meaningful.

We're planning on doing some blog pimps where we highlight some of our favorite blogs and we'll be sharing some videos we've come across that we really like. And, who knows, we might have a few surprises or two.

So, what's with the post title today you ask? Wild Nights - Wild Nights!

At the library here on campus they have a number of small wicker baskets placed on different desks with a sign that says, "Take a Free Poem." Then in the baskets they have a bunch of individual poems you can take. So, being the curious person I am, I reached inside one and grabbed a poem.

First of all let me say I've never been a great fan of poetry. In one of my high school classes we had a teacher who loved, loved, loved, loved poetry and saw it as her mission in life to make us all love, love, love, love poetry. We had to read all her favorite poems, memorize some, analyze them, and then, to add insult to injury, we had to actually write some poems of our own! What a way to kill any possible love you might have for poetry. At least that's what happened for me.

One of the poems I wrote was titled, Poetic Suffering. My teacher was not amused but it still got an "A." Maybe she was trying to encourage me or something. Maybe she thought if I got a lower grade it would depress me and make me hate poetry forever. All I can say is that getting an "A" on a poem about how reading poetry made me suffer did not make me want to write or read more poetry.

Anyway, enough ranting.

Here's the poem I randomly picked from the Poetry Basket. It's funny because for some strange reason I've carried it around with me and keep reading it over and over. I'm actually starting to like the poem {gasp} and I'm sort of beginning to understand it. Maybe this is how you start to like poetry. Don't force it on people. Just notice it lying there, in a basket, making no demands, waiting to be picked.

Wild Nights - Wild Nights!

                                       Wild Nights - Wild Nights!
                                       Were I with thee
                                       Wild Nights should be
                                       Our luxury!

                                       Futile - the winds -
To a heart in port -
                                       Done with the compass -
                                       Done with the chart!

                                       Rowing in Eden -
                                       Ah, the sea!
                                       Might I moor - Tonight -
                                       In thee!

My Lover...at Dawn

Almost a week ago, Brad and I received a poem written by Sammy, who is one of the many special followers here on our blog. She said in her email that she had been thinking about us "...and this was born out of that moment."

The poem really spoke to us in a very personal and intimate way. We asked if she would mind us sharing it with all of you and she graciously said, "Yes, of course. Once the poetry leaves my hands it is meant for you both and you may do whatever you like with it. And, of course it would be an honor to have it posted on your blog, that goes without saying."

Thank you, Sammy.

My Lover...at Dawn

By Sammy

As the dark slowly lifts and the dawn inches forward with soft tendrils of light I look at you, lying there next to me...

I watch the gentle rise and fall of your chest and breathe in the sweet scent of you...

Gently, oh so gently I reach out and brush back the lock of hair that has fallen upon your cheek, and hold it's silken length between my fingers for just a moment more...

As I drop my hand it grazes your cheek oh so softly, and you murmur restlessly, even now turning toward me, your heart reaching for mine, here in the last moments of quiet sleep.

As the light sweeps across our bed, and lingers, touching your sleeping form, illuminating your inner beauty, I am struck once more by the depth of my love for you...

I turn toward the coming dawn, feeling your heat at my back, knowing it's warmth will carry me on into a new day, holding me close in it's safe embrace and yet, at the same time, giving me the strength I need to fly.

Only Breath

Not Christian or Jew or Muslim, not Hindu

Buddhist, sufi, or zen. Not any religion

or cultural system. I am not from the East

or the West, not out of the ocean or up

from the ground, not natural or ethereal, not

composed of elements at all. I do not exist,

am not an entity in this world or in the next,

did not descend from Adam and Eve or any

origin story. My place is placeless, a trace

of the traceless. Neither body or soul.

I belong to the beloved, have seen the two

worlds as one and that one call to and know,

first, last, outer, inner, only that

breath breathing human being.

I do not know who's translation this. but for a first time an English translation of his poem sound very close to its original Farsi

made of earth

The train shifts in the night

Full of rhythm and noise

shuffling to be heard amongst the tracks

A bird collapses on the fringe

Restless and broken by the moons rustic gaze

Wings flogged by the midnight air

Tempered by the dusty sparks of fire

Emerging from the surface of the heart

Shaped to life by the humming of the wind

"Don't be deluded by any other endings,

they're all fake,

either deliberately fake,

with malicious intent to deceive,

or just motivated by excessive optimism

if not by downright sentimentality."

for you

For you, I thought I knew love

In foolish partners, in hap-hazard encounters

In strangers, and dangerous affairs

For you, I made abundant mistakes

Growing and learning carefully, carelessly

Redefining my insides to the out

For you, I'm taking a chance

Hoping you'll forgive and understand

Knowing none of it was planned

For you, I spent this lifetime

Searching until I found

Your eyes, your words...and those hands.

For you, my thoughts race

This heart refuses to beat

And for your reply...I wait...

TERMS OF ENDEARMENT

Once you have a relationship
you can never
Not-have-a-relationship
til one or the other [de]ceases.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder
Or
Out of sight, out of mind
But, not nothing.

Til ONE is nothing.
And then you have --- a memory.

I don't know what pic I'll find to post. I have none of her anymore. But I will extend the 24 hours a little that I gave not to speak ill of the dead. She passed away at 12:25 AM, Wed., 8 Oct 2008 in the ICU of a Tallahassee hospital. She told our sons to go home the preceding evening and, "See you tomorrow." About 2:30 PM of that "tomorrow," I started to get phone calls while I was in the shower and had left the phone by this computer. By the time I heard the urgent, second set of rings, I sensed what they must have been about. Checking the cell's "last call list," I found an uncharacteristically-timed call from my best friend in Tallahassee. My friend confirmed what I had expected. He had called when I didn't answer the sons' previous 2 calls from the shower.

He was surprised that I had no change in attitude or plans about what I was or was not going to do. It figures 'cause he has little psychological insight into ANYone's behavior or what causes it, ANYway! (History "majors" must understand facts, not relationships.) Which leaves him in the cold about any real understanding of the "no-fault" misery she is STILL causing me! WORSE than worthless... Thanks for NOTHING, EX-. We really did NOT deserve each other!
