Tent embassy antics a disaster for the indigenous cause

The image of the self-appointed spokesman for Aborigines, Paul Coe, holding Prime Minister Julia Gillard's shoe and calling for her to "show an act of good faith" and come to the Aboriginal tent embassy in Canberra and collect it - when exactly the opposite was required - reminded me of the last time I encountered Coe.
It was on the steps of a court. Coe had just been struck from the roll of barristers for professional misconduct.
The NSW Legal Services Tribunal found he had filed an affidavit, that was "substantially false, was known by him to be false and was sworn with the intention of deceiving the court ... the tribunal has not received from Mr Coe any acknowledgement that he recognises and regrets his wrongdoing ... "

Outside the court, Coe told reporters: "It confirms my view that it is still a white man's world."
I said to him: "You always cry racism when you get caught out."
Coe responded with an expletive and an obscene gesture.

A reporter from the ABC apologised to Coe for my remarks.
That was in was 1997. Six years later, in 2003, Coe was again investigated for professional misconduct, for accepting legal fees when he was not licensed to practice.
Now Coe, off the public radar for 15 years, has popped up with the Prime Minister's shoe and is grandstanding with it, even though the shoe was acquired during an act of collective hysteria, hate speech and menace.
The shoe should be returned to Gillard, with apologies, but that would require an act of moral courage. So it's not going to happen.
The mayhem when Gillard lost her shoe may have received abundant publicity, and created an image that went around the world, but it is a disaster for the credibility of the indigenous justice movement in Australia, which has been working with other leading Australians and politicians to put a referendum to voters to recognise indigenous people in the constitution.
Now a fringe has muscled into the media glare, pushing aside the constructive majority. This will stick in the public's mind.
The hysteria was driven by Michael Anderson, a co-founder of the Aboriginal tent embassy near Parliament House in Canberra 40 years ago, who whipped up a crowd of demonstrators about Opposition Leader Tony Abbott.
This is what Abbott had said during an interview earlier in the day: "Look, I can understand why the tent embassy was established all those years ago. I think a lot has changed for the better since then. We had the historic apology just a few years ago, one of the genuine achievements of Kevin Rudd as prime minister. We had the proposal which is currently for national consideration to recognise indigenous people in the constitution. I think the indigenous people of Australia can be very proud of the respect in which they are held by every Australian and yes, I think a lot has changed since then and I think it probably is time to move on from that."
This is how Anderson characterised Abbott's remarks: "He said the Aboriginal embassy had to go, we heard it on a radio broadcast. We thought no way, so we circled around the building ... It's just madness on the part of Tony Abbott. What he said amounts to inciting racial riots."
The chasm between reality and hysteria is an embarrassment to Anderson.
The irony is that Abbott has spent weeks with indigenous communities searching for ways to end the cycle of failed government policies. He is particularly close to Aboriginal leader Noel Pearson.
A further irony is that indigenous affairs is one area where Gillard and Abbott have put aside their many differences.
It was notable that Gillard, when told her security could not be guaranteed as a gathering of protesters banged on the windows yesterday, made sure to inquire that Abbott, who was also at the ceremony she was attending, would also be looked after.
That has been widely noted, to her credit.

Hollywood actor apologises for saying if he were on board, he would have saved United Airlines flight 93 from crashing during the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Hollywood star Mark Wahlberg has apologised for saying he would have stopped one of the planes hijacked on September 11, 2001, from crashing if he had been on board.
Wahlberg, 34, was reportedly due to fly on United Airlines flight 93 from Newark, New Jersey to San Francisco but switched to a charter flight instead.
Flight 93 crashed into a Pennsylvania field after passengers wrestled with the terrorists who hijacked the plane. Other aircraft hijacked that morning crashed into the World Trade Centre towers in New York and the Pentagon in Virginia.

"If I was on that plane with my kids, it wouldn't have went down like it did," the actor and former underwear model told Men's Journal magazine, which published the interview in its February edition.
"There would have been a lot of blood in that first-class cabin and then me saying, 'OK, we're going to land somewhere safely, don't worry.'"
His comments were criticised by the widow of Thomas Burnett-Bailey, one of the passengers who challenged the hijackers.

"Does Mark Wahlberg have a pilot's licence? Then I think hindsight is 20/20 and it's insignificant to say what you would have done if you weren't there," Deena Burnett-Bailey told entertainment gossip website TMZ.
"The plan for Flight 93 was foiled by heroes. For him to speculate that his presence on board could have stopped everything is silly and disrespectful. Sounds like someone is grandstanding."
Mr Burnett-Bailey had called his wife while he was on the flight, telling her: "I know we're all going to die - there's three of us who are going to do something about it. ... I love you, honey."
Wahlberg later apologised, telling TMZ: "To speculate about such a situation is ridiculous to begin with.
"I deeply apologise to the families of the victims that my answer came off as insensitive; it was certainly not my intention."

ISLAMIC leaders want Muslims in Australia to get interest-free loans for religious reasons.
The nation's Islamic leaders want recognition of sharia law as it applies to banking practices, according to an exclusive Herald Sun survey of imams.
There was also a call for recognition of sharia law as it applies to family law.

The survey showed some imams are sceptical that Osama bin Laden's death will be of benefit to ordinary Muslims, and they are unhappy with the way US forces disposed of his body.
The survey has also revealed:
STRONG condemnation of MPs who criticise Muslim women for wearing the burqa/nijab.
CONCERN that ordinary Muslims are still being linked to terrorism.
The survey was conducted in the wake of a $55,000 Federal Government training program for imams on Australian laws and values.
They have been told to preach core Australian values such as the fair go, freedom, and responsibility.
Imam Yusuf Parker, from the Alhidayah Centre in Perth, said Australia should consider recognising sharia law as it applied to finance and family law matters.
Imam Parker said Islam forbade the charging or paying of interest "so finding interest-free loans will again help Muslims to practise their Islam better".
"Other than the two major issues mentioned, I don't see other sharia law that Muslims would seek to have legally recognised," he said.
Fellow WA imam Sheik Burhaan Mehtar said sharia law often was raised to scare non-Muslims, but a dialogue would lead to better understanding.
"Islamic banking and the non-slavery of humans is a classic example. Interest is slavery," he said.
Islamic Council of Victoria board member Nazeem Hussain said legal and tax barriers currently prevented local banks from offering Islamic finance products.
"That's a massive market ... we'd encourage the Government to seek ways to tap into that market," he said.
Imam Parker said bin Laden's demise might serve as closure for those convinced he masterminded the 9/11 attacks.
"But the reality is that the negative impact on Islam and Muslims has not changed, and it will take many decades for that to change," he said.
Sheik Burhaan Mehtar said the symbolic victory of bin Laden's death would remain hollow while people in nations such as Afghanistan suffered a "terror of death delivered from the skies" by the US and its allies.
Gold Coast imam Imraan Husain reflected a general view that bin Laden's burial at sea was a violation of Islamic funeral rites.
Victorian imam Sheik Ramy Najmeddine said Muslims felt there was an unfair link between terrorism and Islam.
"But we believe this is being broken down by the good work that members of both the Muslim and non-Muslim community are doing."
Sheik Mohamadu Saleem, a spokesman for Board of Imams Victoria, accused some MPs of trying to get political mileage out of the burqa issue. "It is mere political expediency," he said.
Victorian imam Abdinur Weli said: "If only Muslims are the people who are told what to wear, then it is discrimination."

A MUSEUM featuring Hitler that allows visitors to dress up in Nazi uniforms and pose with swastika flags could open in Ukraine. 
The 10,000 PoWs and local civilians who are believed to have built the bunker were allegedly shot by the Nazis and buried there.

A MUSEUM featuring Hitler that allows visitors to dress up in Nazi uniforms and pose with swastika flags could open in Ukraine.
The city of Vinnitsa is hoping to turn the Wehrwolf bunker - where Hitler stayed during WWII - into a tourist attraction, the BBC reports.
The museum had been due to open in May to coincide with the commemoration of victory over the Nazis.
Kateryna Vysotska, who works at the Vinnitsa Museum, said the bunker would also serve as a memorial for victims.
However, communist and socialist party activists fear it could become a magnet for neo-Nazis.

Lydia Zakusylova, who chairs the regional Communist Party, told the BBC a road sign pointing to the location of the Wehrwolf already has neo-Nazis flocking to the site.
Ms Zakusylova said initially there were suggestions to restore wartime dug-outs for PoWs, but then she was told about plans to exhibit uniforms and flags of the officers and men of the Reich.
"They wanted to offer tourists the chance to try on uniforms, hang sub machine-guns around their necks and pose for pictures with Nazi flags in the background. This is blatant Nazi propaganda," she told the BBC.

Local villagers, including children, were enlisted to dig trenches and clear out the woods.
Ms Vysotska said she met with veterans and told them that the bunker has become a tourist attraction irrespective of their wishes.
"Visitors will keep coming and it would be better if our museum staff conduct proper guided tours," she said.
In April, 2010, a museum celebrating Nazi Germany's SS opened at its former leader's headquarters in Wewelsburg Castle in Paderborn, Germany.
The $10.7 million tourist attraction also sparked fears it will lead to far right neo-fascist pilgrimages.
