Here is a great article on Maybe Maimed, about sex education for youths, and the group Kinkforall, that I found first of all on Goose's blog, and I also want to post a link to it. It's words that are well worth getting out for a broader read. ~Assuming more than 4 people ever read anything here! ;-) But even if the 3 of you that aren't Goose read it, that's cool.
I got into a discussion about the word 'kink' in the comments, and you might find that interesting too.
My point was, I dislike the use of the word 'kink'. It has (for me) such connotations and conjures mental images of fat middle aged men in ridiculous rubber gimp suits, that could well not only be into 'kink', but also possibly into small children.
I know that there is more to it than that, (of course there is, that's not in question here!), and that branding anybody into anything other than vanilla sex is utterly stupid, but only upon being brave enough to explore, do you realize that.
Until then, the fat middle aged men in rubber put you off, don't they? They did me.
And that is my point here.
If I had that image, then so do a lot of other people, probably. My mind has always been fairly open, too, more than a lot of the people I know, that live where I do.
Would you send your own teenage daughter to a group called 'Kink For All' for sex-ed classes? Sadly, a lot of people might say no. And that is what I feel, would be something to consider. And that's just my own thoughts.
There has to be a way to get the 'vanilla' folk to get past that as their image of the word 'kink', if people in the 'kink' community want to be more widely accepted. Perhaps they don't, I don't know.
I think the term 'sex-positive' is a lot more, well, positive. But that's just me.
I guess it's not nearly as catchy though, is it? 'Kink For All" is pretty catchy, I admit, and I like that about it! :-)
