Things that make me happy

I feel happy when I wake up in the middle of the night and realize I have 4 more hours to sleep!

I feel happy when Matty wakes me up on Saturday morning with a cup of freshly brewed hazelnut coffee and a kiss and then cuddles with me.

I feel happy when a friend tells me something I said was helpful and made a difference to them.

I feel happy watching Matty's face light up when I laugh at one of his corny jokes.

I feel happy when somebody leaves me a comment on the blog that says something like they're proud of me, or I've helped them in some way.

I feel happy coming up with things that make me happy.

I feel happy being around people who are patient.

I feel happy when Matty sends me flowers at work.

I feel happy when Spring arrives and lots of guys walk around without their shirts.

I feel happy that Matty never gets jealous when I point out a hot guy.

I feel happy when Matty looks straight in my eyes when he tells me he loves me. I feel like there's nobody else in the world but the two of us when he does that.

I feel happy when people share with me things that make them happy.

♥ Being each other's Valentine ♥

We're only 3 months shy of celebrating our 3 Year Anniversary of having first met each other.

But today we're taking the day off from school and work to be together and celebrate our love.

We have a date later today at a spa for a luxurious, self-indulgent, and wonderfully decadent foot soak while enjoying some spicy hot cocoa with mint and a layer of foam.

Then we get a couples full-body massage... one room, two tables next to each other, two massage therapists.

This afternoon we'll be awaiting delivery of a dozen chocolate roses we sent ourselves.
And this evening we have reservations for a Valentine's Day dinner at a swanky restaurant we've never been to before. They specialize in French and Mediterranean cuisine and the menu sounds exciting.

This paragraph was written by Bradley:

Before we leave for dinner, Matty has offered to paint my toenails and my fingernails. I'm not sure why this is such a treat for me, but I get tingles just thinking about watching his expression while he's doing it.

This paragraph was written by Matty:

I'm going to continue my tradition (started last Valentine's Day) of having Bradley wear a single red rose boutonniere to dinner. That rose says, "Mine. All mine. Do not touch." Also, Bradley wanted to see if I would be willing to wear just a little bit of eyeliner tonight. He said the eyeliner will serve the same purpose as that rose he will be wearing. I'm going for it!

After dinner, we're back home for the evening where we'll celebrate the love in our hearts, enjoy each other's company, and remember all the reasons we fell in love in the first place.

But the best part of this day will be enjoying all the reasons we are still in love with each other after almost three years.

The incomplete journey...

This is our first day back to school { sigh} ...but did you catch all the references in the Second Inaugural Address yesterday to the rights of LGBT people? Even Stonewall was mentioned! It really was thrilling to hear something more inclusive for a change. Hope everyone has a nice day.

Merry Christmas

From our home to yours, Merry Christmas!

Whatever holiday tradition you celebrate,
we wish you joy and peace for the coming year!

Do you have a special holiday tradition?

The two of us were talking about creating some holiday traditions we might want to make part of our annual celebration. We wondered if everyone would be willing to share a holiday tradition you celebrate. Maybe it's a special routine you observe for Christmas Eve or Day.

Or maybe it's something like going caroling or gathering everybody together to read a holiday story. Or maybe it's how you volunteer your time for some worthwhile charity or organization.

Or it might even be going out to buy a Christmas tree and decorating it and adding a new and special ornament each year.

It might even be something a little "nontraditional" but has some meaning to you during this holiday season because of something special that happened in the past.

Whatever it is, we thought it might be fun to hear about what you do. You can just describe the tradition, or you might like to share a little of the story behind your tradition.

From a marriage license to Married!

Remember a few weeks ago when I posted this pic about the two guys in Seattle, Washington who were getting a marriage license? I wrote about how breathtaking this pic was to me.

Well, we now have an update. They are now officially married! Here they after their wedding at the First Baptist Church in Seattle:

Thanks to Kerstin for sending us this link to their wedding pic!

Best of luck, guys!

I'm still waiting for somebody to write their story.

This took my breath away for some reason

Sometimes when I'm out in public and see a couple looking at each other while they're walking hand-in-hand, I get a really nice warm feeling inside. I never know the two people, but I recognize that look in their eyes. You can always tell when "that look" is a friendship look versus an I love you look.

When I first came across the photo above, I literally (not figuratively) lost my breath. Just stopped breathing and started getting teary.

This is a couple applying for a marriage license in Washington the other day and was carried in some newspapers there.

One thing I like about the pic is how they're not looking at each other. They've probably done their share of looking into each other's eyes and everything there is settled. In this pic, they're looking outward. I'm sure they're looking into the eyes of a representative of the State and are swearing some kind of legal oath so they can get their license.

There's just something so terribly beautiful about their outward look. And you know what? I am completely convinced there's a beautiful story in that pic. Or maybe a thousand beautiful stories.

When you look at this pic, can you hear their story? Somebody needs to start writing. I swear there's probably a thousand stories there.

My birthday fanboy moment

I mentioned in my last post that Matty had organized a really nice birthday celebration.

He showered me with lots of smaller gifts during the day so I now have a couple of really nice sweaters for the winter, a new wool hat, a very colorful scarf to go with my new winter jacket, some sexy underwear, and a beautiful sterling silver necklace!

Then Matty took me out to dinner in the heart of downtown Boston. He had already said it was a "dress-up" restaurant, which is a huge deal for Matty since he almost never, ever leaves the house without his baseball cap!

I was a little worried when we walked out the door to leave and he's in his nice navy blue suit with his light blue and cream-colored tie... and his Red Sox cap! Not wanting to embarrass him (or me later), in a very polite voice I said something like, "Don't you have a Red Sox cap that's a bluish color?"

Without missing a beat, and flashing the sweetest smile, he said, "Aw, I'm not going to wear the cap inside. I wouldn't embarrass you like that."

So, whew! In all honesty I wouldn't have minded if he had worn it in. Being the gentleman he is (when the occasion calls for that), he would have taken it off before greeting the maître d. And without the cap on while we're in the car, I would have felt I was being kidnapped by some unknown bad person.

Well, being taken out to dinner for one's birthday is something that happens to a lot of people. But being taken to a restaurant where the Chef is an idol of mine is just icing on the cake! But wait. That's not all!

Before I get to the good part, I should say this is a Chef I've been following for a while now. Not in a stalking way, but she's a pretty well-known Chef and has been featured in local as well as national magazine and newspaper feature articles. I also recently got to see her interviewed on a television show. And I recorded it! (Is my "fanboy" showing!)

Oh, and get this. Her style of cooking is something that really interests me. I want to learn more about it because her approach is something I'd like to play around with and maybe develop my own unique variation of. I've tried to explain it to Matty without his eyes glazing over (LOL), but it's essentially taking some pretty traditional dishes and experimenting with combinations of spices and flavoring that aren't usually associated with those dishes. Anyway, it's something I feel inspired by.

So on to the big surprise! When Matty called the restaurant to make reservations, he explained that it was my birthday and I was currently in college but planned on going to culinary school to become a chef someday. And that I had been following Chef's professional career and was inspired by her cooking style. He said it would mean a lot to me if Chef could possibly stop by our table just to say hello.

Matty had already told me he was taking me to this particular restaurant, which that alone was enough to make the celebration very special. But he didn't tell me Chef had agreed to stop by our table to say hello! I'm such a fanboy of this chef that if he had told me this ahead of time, I probably would have hyperventilated and fainted the minute I stepped inside!

So while we're eating our main course, Chef walks to our table and says something like, "Hello, I'm Chef ___, and just wanted to wish someone named 'Bradley' a Happy Birthday." Thank all that is holy I didn't have a mouth full of food because I surely would have choked to death or spewed the food in my mouth all across the table, or worse yet, all over her!! And then fainted!

I didn't realize I was on my feet when I extended my hand and said, "Hi. I'm Bradley. Nice to meet you. And thank you."

She gestured for me to sit back down (Matty assures me I didn't come across as some dorky fanboy) and she asked about our dinner. How to you form an intelligent and coherent thought when your idol chef asks your opinion of their cooking? Without coming across as a punk fanboy?

Thank goodness I had already talked to Matty about what flavors I thought she used for our dishes but I didn't want to get into fanboy gushing, so I just said everything was perfect. THEN she said, "Matthew told me you were planning a culinary career. Here, let me give you my card. It's really nice to meet you both. And Happy Birthday again."

I think I said something appropriate in response. Matty assures me I just said, "Nice to meet you, too. Thanks again."

I've been on a fanboy cloud since Saturday night. And I have Chef's card!! Well, it's the restaurant's card, but it has Chef's name on it. That counts, right?

I was talking to a friend about whether I should follow-up with her. I thought just sending her a little "thank you" note might work, but then again I don't want her thinking I'm some kind of stalking fanboy -- the "fanboy" part is right but I don't want to do anything cheesy.

My friend said just a short note would be a nice gesture, and a good way to network, even though she's not going to remember me 5 or 10 years down the road. Unless..... maybe I could send her a note every month, and maybe call her occasionally, and go back to her restaurant frequently, and.... Nah. That's not fanboy excitement -- that's definitely just stalking! LOL!

So, I'm just sending her a short note and will leave it at that. But the card she gave me, the one which she touched with her very hand, is getting laminated and framed!! Am I a fanboy or what? ;)

We have a birthday boy!

Happy 20th birthday, Babe.

It's your birthday and you're going to be hearing, "Happy Birthday" a lot today.

I have no doubt every single person who tells you this means it from their heart.

But I'm especially lucky to be the one who gets to spend time with you, hold your hand, give you surprise kisses, remind you of how much you mean to me.

When we first met, I honestly had no idea how important you would become to me. Your quiet yet fierce strength has indeed become the solid rock of my life.

I know how you like collecting quotes and I found this one for you.
Thank you for all the special moments when you've taken my breath away.

Happy Birthday, Sweetheart. I love you. It's as simple as that.

Enjoy the victory but we need to keep working!

I have a confession to make.

Please don't hate me for it.

I slept through the election results last night.

I tried to stay up with Matty, but I kept falling asleep. Maybe I was ready for this thing to just be over. Maybe I was feeling really stressed about the outcome. I just couldn't take the possibility we'd be left with a cliffhanger that would last for days and weeks.

When did I find out the results? It was close to midnight (Eastern time zone) when Matty climbed in bed and was bouncing around, hugging me, and all I could hear as he nuzzled up to me was, "You asleep? Hmm? You awake? Sweetie? I love you. Are you awake?"

I knew this was more than just a booty call.

I turned over and didn't even have to ask who won the election.

Matty reached over and turned on the bedside lamp. Then he ran down all the results we were interested in, from President, to U.S. Senate, to local Congressman, to the ballot questions.

We both just hugged each other for the longest time. Then we had a booty call celebration!

This morning I went back and looked at the the two paragraphs I contributed to our joint post from yesterday:

As valuable and important as voting is, walking in your polling center, making some marks on the ballot, and walking out is just the beginning. It's also important to take all the steps after that.

Do you stay aware of what elected officials are doing after they get in office? Do you express your opinion about important issues they are debating? Do you talk to other people about issues that matter to you?
So as we are celebrating many victories, it's important to see this as just the beginning. Our work is not done until ALL people are treated equally under the law.

Let's enjoy the many positive results (and all the booty calls that go with them!), then let's get back to work. We're not done yet!

My Summer of Missy

This is just a shout out to one of my fave MM romance authors, the one, the only, Missy Welsh!

Her book, My Summer of Wes, was the very first MM romance book I ever read. It was published about 3 months after I turned 18, and holds a special place in my heart. It told the story of two young guys who were very capable of falling in Love (with a capital L) and it gave both Brad and I a sense that if Mal and Wes could tackle the challenges, then maybe we could, too.

Missy is celebrating the anniversary of her book's publication, and we'd like to add our Happy Anniversary to her two boys, Mal and Wes!

Here's the post where I talked about her book in a little more detail: Click here.

And you can head over to Missy's blog to read the blurb and an excerpt: Blurb & Excerpt.

She also wrote a post on her blog celebrating the book's publication: Missy's blog post.

Happy Anniversary, Mal & Wes! (And thank you, Missy)

Independence Day Celebration

Happy Independence Day!

We're spending the day with my parents. They have a barbecue planned and we're going to relax in (and by) the pool. Plus, I get to wear my brand new dark blue Speedo (with a white racing stripe)!

How are you celebrating the holiday?
(If you're not in the U.S., how do you celebrate a similar type day in your country?)

Kyle Proposes to Tommy

"On April 28, I proposed to my boyfriend, Tommy, in front of 700 people at his former college a cappella group's spring concert, which marked the 20th anniversary of the group. The Boston University Dear Abbeys had just released their new CD, which my boyfriend had spent the last two years recording and producing as the group's music director.

"I conspired to be summoned onstage so I could propose in front of almost all the people dearest to us. You see, the Dear Abbeys are more than a college singing group, they're a family. They're our family, so I knew it was crucial they be a part of the plan.

Kyle and Tommy
 "The overwhelming amount of love and support we received that night, from friends, strangers, male, female, young, old, gay, straight, was just incredible to experience. That night, it didn't matter what beliefs people held, everyone could see that love is love and that it knows no bounds.

"We will be getting married on October 12, 2013, in honor of Matthew Shepard's life and the legacy the Shepards have created with their foundation's work in the world. If our story could help even one burdened soul or change one person's opinion on gay marriage, we'd feel accomplished.

"We're hoping that the love we experienced is shared in this video and offers hope to those struggling with their sexual identities or feeling isolated and scared, educates those who may not agree with gay marriage, and promotes equality while erasing hatred.

Happy Pride Month!

I just couldn't resist showing off a few things about Boston Pride.

Somehow we missed seeing Underwear Guys! ---------------->

I was one the lookout for Speedo Guys, but didn't see any. This will do, though! ;)

It was soooo cool to see our Governor (Deval Patrick) and his wife (Diane) marching!

And here's Boston Mayor, Tom Menino, right between two rainbow flags!

And a nice scene in front of Boston City Hall, where they raised the Rainbow Flag that day!

Coming Out & Coming In

When both of us came out as gay four years ago, we were in our mid-teens (15 for Brad, 16 for Matt). It seemed at the time that we had done something pretty monumental...

Hi Everybody! We're guest posting over at one of our favorite blogs, Chicks & Dicks.

This month their theme is Living Out With Pride in celebration of Pride Month all over the world. Our guest post is one thing we're doing to celebrate the festivities.

We worked on this post together and we hope you head over and check it out. Oh, and while you're there leave us a comment to let us know you dropped by. Pretty please? ;-)

Something to Think About

It's All Over!

No, silly... not our relationship!

(at noon today, that is)

We are pleased to report we both did quite well and now it's time for a little
Rest and Relaxation!

We finally have some time now to celebrate Matty's 20th Birthday this weekend!

And we also have some time to celebrate our Two Year Anniversary and catch up on sleep, sex, reading, taking naps, sex, movies, eating, sex..... sex.

Two Years Together

 (NOTE: Yesterday was a very special day for both of us. Two years ago we met for the very first time. I'm republishing the post I wrote then and all you have to do is change "one year" to "two years" but the feelings are the same. ~Matt)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Who would have known that a little over a year ago, I would have fallen in love? Something I always wanted to happen, but it was more like an abstract idea than something I could see and feel and hold and, well.... you get the idea.
So, to mark this amazing milestone, I jotted down some things I've been thinking about.
"I love you." Somebody said that three word sentence has been used so many times that nobody really knows anymore what it means. Or, I guess it can mean just about anything you want it to mean.
Brad and I met a little over a year ago, and we've been talking a lot about our relationship. We've been trying to pinpoint when out first-year anniversary is. We've decided that we have a number of "firsts" that would qualify as an anniversary of some sort.
I met Brad for the very first time at my birthday party when I turned eighteen, a little over a year ago. So, what do you call that? I'm tempted to call it our "Love at First Sight Anniversary." Is that too mushy? What does that really mean, Love at First Sight? I remember seeing him for the first time and having this "stunned" feeling. I swear to God it was like I went into this trance or something. I know that sounds a little dramatic, but I can still remember my whole body tingling all over when I looked and saw the most beautiful guy I had ever seen come in the door. I almost forgot where I was and who I was with. I mean, there were at least 25 other people at the party and I just zoned out and he and I were the only ones there.
I asked him out on a date for the following weekend. I took him to dinner and then a movie where we held hands for the first time. So, maybe that was our "First Date Anniversary."
Even though I wanted to kiss him at my birthday party and then again after our first date, it took a lot of restraint on my part to slow things down. I've always had a hard time pacing myself and slowing things down when I have this impulse to do the first thing that comes to my mind. It might be because I have that ADHD thing going on and I have to take a deep breath and think things through. But I also realized I didn't want to mess anything up with this beautiful guy. He had this low-key shy thing about him and he always looked so calm and sweet and sometimes I thought there was something delicate about  him.
I remember thinking, Whatever happens between us will be worth the wait. And for the time being, holding his hand was even better than what I thought kissing him or even having sex with him might be like. You have to take my word for it, but we were able to say a lot to each other through holding hands. Sometimes it was a gentle hold, sometimes it involved this sweet squeezing, sometimes there was a warm sigh passing through our hands and then there was this firm and extended grip that said, I don't want to let you go.
It was pretty obvious to both of us that we had this special chemistry going on. I remember having to restrain myself from calling him 3 or 4 times a day (OK, that's an underestimate). Why couldn't I stop thinking about him?
After we had gone on maybe four dates, I wanted to ask him if he thought we were a "couple" now. I had never felt this way before and to be honest, I had no idea how to bring it up. Where was that Guide to Dating handbook?? What if he really liked me (which he seemed to) but was thinking about dating other guys? I mean, he never gave any indication he was thinking that way, but I guess I was way too insecure then. I had heard from friends of mine that gay guys have a hard time committing to each other, especially the younger you are (all this so-called "wisdom" when I never asked for it!).
Was I moving too fast? Was I going to scare him away by being so intense too early? I really feared he might drop something on me like the whole, Let's be friends and, well, maybe see other people and then talk about it. Again, all this was coming from me and my insecurities. He seemed as totally into me as I was into him.
The more time we spent together, the stronger my feelings became. Brad seemed  so comfortable with himself and  his body that it was a little unnerving to me. When he would talk to me -- just normal everyday conversation -- he would sometimes reach over and touch my arm. He would never linger there longer than a second or two. It's like sometimes people would add a slight touch to the words they were using. He never overdid it but it would always make me a little self-conscious. It's like that little one or two second touch was saying so much, if not more, than his words. It was probably the first time anything like that had ever happened to me -- or it was the first time I had noticed.
The night we both said, "I love you," was so very special. We'll write more about how that happened later. For now, all that matters is that we can say we've have a number of different "anniversaries" and they're all very special.
So, for now,
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, Brad!
All of them!
I love you!
Guess Who's Having a Birthday?
Since we're right in the middle of finals, we're going to have a little celebration tonight, and then this weekend I have some bigger plans for the birthday boy!
You know the tradition where the Birthday Boy gets a bare bottom spanking --- one spank for each year? Matty informed me that there's also one additional spank for "good luck," one spank for "best wishes," one spank for "no longer being a 'teenager'," one "to grow on," one spank for "being a good boy" (somewhat questionable! lol), one spank for "being a bad boy," (not questionable), one spank for "being adorable," (mostly), one spank "to be a good boy" (much needed).
Plus he said there's a tradition where you get "a pinch to grow an inch," (hehe... I'm not even going there!).
Happy Birthday, sweetie. Assume the position and have your pants and underwear down when I get home. Love you.
